Under the recently introduced Gati Shakti project, the Centre will spend roughly Rs 50,000 crore to build 500 multimodal freight terminals over the next four to five years. Different modes of transportation — roads, rivers, airways, or any other methods — will be smoothly connected with the railway terminal in a multi-modal freight terminal.
"Its (multi-modal cargo terminals) primary focus would be bulk goods like coal, steel, bauxite, aluminium, limestone, and cement." Other parcel services facilities will be constructed alongside it. When the modernization of the New Delhi Railway Station commences, for example, an integrated facility for parcel services will be constructed. This is because parcels arrive and depart in large numbers in a large metropolis. As a result, if parcels can reach a central location, they can be disseminated to other forward locations at a low cost.
According to this plan, the Gati Shakti programme will build at least 500 multimodal cargo ports. During the next four to five years, they will receive a total investment of almost Rs 50,000 crore.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a Rs 100 lakh crore national master plan for multi-modal connectivity named "Gati Shakti" on Wednesday, with the goal of developing infrastructure to cut logistic costs and stimulate the economy. The government intends to build roughly 200 multimodal cargo ports during the next three years. Some may be less than Rs 100 crore, while others may cost more. However, we are estimating a budget of Rs 100 crore per terminal.
The railways will play the most important role in it (Gati Shakti)... The most essential question is how can railway freight terminals be converted to multi-modal cargo terminals. The railways are deploying optical fibre along their 68,000 kilometres of track.
Gati Shakti will also involve a project to figure out how to use this fibre for other types of transportation or logistical services. Multi-modal passenger terminals will also be built, and how metro service can be connected with train service or airports will be investigated. Under the Gatishakti scheme, the Railways would push both of these initiatives — multimodal freight terminals and multimodal passenger terminals — in the coming days.
Gati Shakti, according to the prime minister, aims to minimise logistic costs, boost cargo handling capacity, and shorten turnaround times. Modi had previously stated that taxpayers' money had been 'insulted' in the past due to a sluggish approach to development work, with departments operating in silos and no cooperation on projects.
