Rosalind Franklin Fellowship, University Medical Center Groningen -- Marianne Rots
My name is Marianne Rots and I'm a professor in moleculair epi genetics. I started it as a Rosalind Franklin Fellow in 2007 here at the UMCG and my field of research concerns epi genetics. And epi genetics, epi, is derived from the Greek word 'on top of', so we are not looking into the DNA sequence, but we are more interested in how does the cell know what to take from it's genetic information in order to make the proteins. We are very much interested in how does the cell know which genes to read and which other genes not to read. And especially as being part of the university medical centre, we want to see the different decisions a diseased cell makes. In order to not function normally.
So the great part of being a Rosalind Franklin Fellow is that you can pursue your own ideas. Normally with 10-year track positions we have in Groningen, there is a position available in a certain discipline, with an aim of a specific sub-topic of this discipline. And as a Rosalind Franklin Fellow you can do what you want to do, what you think is important and what really can add to science without having this pre-determined path of going into.
So, when I wanted to do the epi-genetic overwriting, epi-genetic editing we call that, people were not too sure that this would really be possible because of dogma's in the field. And the UMCG really gave me the trust and the opportunities to explore what I thought was possible. And indeed now we have shown that it is possible, we can go in there, we can target specific genes and we can re-express or silence them. So, I think this kind of research would not have been possible if I would have applied to a 10-year track position which has a determined focus and a determined outcome.
Another advantage of being a Rosalind Franklin Fellow here at the UMCG is that the connections with other departments of the university are very very small. So I have collaborations ongoing with the chemistry department which is not situated in the heart of the city but somewhere more outside at the university campus, but that is only a 15-minute bike drive. So we can very easily communicate and set up collaborations and really explore multi-disciplinary approaches and make the best out of different worlds of science.
Groningen is a beautiful place to both live and work. It is a quite small city and it has lots of students so there is lots of activities ongoing with respect to nightlife and also culturally there is lots of things organised. We have a very nice museum of modern art. But what I especially like is to live in the city so we are, you know, at the heart of the life of the city. But it is because it is such a relativily small city, it's really easy to get out there. Just take your bike and before you know it you're in the outsides of the country. You'll really see very beautiful nature and that's all very closeby.
Go! Go for it, do it, make sure you put your strong sights on paper because we are looking for good people, but also enthousiastic people, motivated people, people who can do the job, who really are devoted to make it work. And especially because the Rosalind Franklin Fellowship gives you the opportunity to work on your field of interest, on your expertise. This is something, it's an opportunity you can not ignore.
