Javier Glatt, the co-founder of Vancouver-based virtual construction and 3D modeling firm Cadmakers, Inc. talked to the Journal of Commerce about the challenges and advantages of using technology on and off the worksite.
Glatt explained how virtual construction of the University of British Columbia’s Aquatic Centre was a complicated and challenging process made more efficient through modeling of the structure, and added the UBC project is only one of many the firm has worked on this year.
Glatt said while there can be resistance to new technology being deployed in construction, there is also much to learn from the veterans in the trade, and knowledge is usually passed back and forth between both parties.
He also said that construction is a risk-averse industry, and that sometimes working things out on the site is the best way to mitigate risk. But with new technology allowing for “virtual” construction, risks can also be avoided before a project begins building in the real world.
