(12 Jun 1994) Thousands of Hassidic Jews of the ultra-orthodox Lubavitch
movement flocked to airports around the world on Sunday (12/6) to
catch flights to New York, where their leader, Rabbi Menachem
Schneerson, died earlier in the day aged 92. Schneerson was a
figure of great religious power and political clout in Judaism,
and was the seventh leader of the Lubavitch movement which was
founded in Russia in the 18th century and is now headquartered in
Brooklyn. The movement has 300,000 members, many of whom
considered Schneerson to be the Messiah. While those outside New
York hurried to get there, hundreds of grief-stricken followers
gathered outside the group's headquarters in Brooklyn in light
rain. Schneerson had been in critical condition at a Manhattan
hospital since suffering a stroke in March, his second in two
years. His death leaves the movement with no successor.
