The conservative New Democracy party claimed victory in Greece’s federal 2023 election Sunday, making party leader and reformist, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as prime minister once again.
Mitsotakis, 55, served as Greece’s prime minister between July 2019 and May 2023. The politician stepped down from his role as federal leader only two months ago, in favour of a caretaker premier following an inconclusive vote.
With his second victory in less than five years, Mitsotakis has vowed to push ahead with reforms to rebuild Greece’s credit rating after the overwhelming debt crisis which loomed over the country for more than a decade.
“Tomorrow dawns an even better day,” Mitsotakis said in an address to the nation following his victory.
Responding to his defeat, opposition (Syriza) party leader Alexis Tsipras said, “It was the most difficult but also the most beautiful electoral battle that we have ever fought.”
