British Opposition Leader Keir Starmer began prime minister's questions on Wednesday by calling Rishi Sunak's appointment to the role a "significant moment" in national history as the "first British Asian prime minister" in the country's history.
"It's a reminder that for all the challenges we face as a country, Britain is a place where people of all races and all beliefs can fulfill their dreams," he said in the House of Commons.
The congratulations was short-lived however as he went on to target Sunak's decision to reinstall Suella Braverman as interior minister, less than a week after she resigned from the role for breaching government rules.
He suggested the move was in order for Sunak to secure support for his leadership bid, which he went on to win uncontested. Starmer also called on Sunak for a general election in order to get his own mandate to govern.
Sunak though fired back at Starmer over his calls for the election, saying Starmer's party lost to the Conservatives in 2019 to a platform they were continuing with that earned them their majority victory.
