Tony Jeffries on boxing footwork | 6 footwork defenses with counter punches for boxing on the heavy bag. Boxing footwork gives a good defense which is just as important as offense in boxing. Some boxers even claim that good defence is a bit more critical. In this video, I am going to share with you 6 different footwork defences and counterpunches you can use with them.
My name is Tony Jeffries, Olympic medalist and undefeated professional boxer. I am now co-owner of Box 'N Burn, two boxing fitness gyms in Los Angeles, as well as the Box 'N Burn Academy where we train professional boxing trainers.
Knowing how to defend yourself with your hands and boxing stance is highly beneficial. Unless you are a complete beginner you probably already know this. The last piece of this puzzle is footwork defences.
Here are the 6 different footwork defences that every boxer should know.
#1 Side Step
You do the side step by throwing two punches, defending with your back foot then stepping aside. From here you counterpunch with the straight cross. You can also throw the one-two or a jab as you side-step then counterpunch with a two.
#2 Side Step with lead foot first
You do this by stepping to the opposite side with your lead foot first. Throw the jab, side step with your lead foot, then pivot around with your back foot. Doing this, you have changed the angle and defended whatever is thrown back. As you step aside, you can throw the straight cross and then pivot. From here you can throw a counterpunch.
#3 Step back
This footwork defence is my favourite. Sidestepping means, you are still in range, but a step back takes you out of range. You do this by throwing a one-two, stepping back and then step back in with a jab. From the step back, you can also step back in with powerful combinations such as the double hook to the body, hook to the head.
#4 Row and step
You do this by throwing a one-two, rowing and stepping with your back foot then counterpunch with your straight right hand. As you step, you can also throw in a hook to the body.
#5 Row and step with your lead foot
You do this by throwing a fast one-two hook, rowing and stepping with your lead foot then counterpunch with a left hook. The row after the lead hook puts you in a great position to throw a very powerful left hook.
#6 Pivot hook
You do this by stepping and then throwing a pivot hook. With the right technique, you can get a lot of power. Swing your body around, use your body weight to get more power in the punch.
