In John’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that he will raise the dead at the last day. This resurrection is the hope of eternal life that Jesus offers to those who follow him. This is only one of several passages where Jesus says the same thing – he is the start of a story of resurrection which extends to his followers, and which has its end in eternal life.
This contrasts with the idea that exists in many churches, which teach that eternal life is granted at death to the faithful at death, and that they continue to live in heaven. This is an idea which came into Christianity in the second half of the second century from Greek philosophy, although the Apostles were forced to fight against it in the early decades after the resurrection of Jesus, as we find in the Epistles.
