Few seals get a name from us, they are wild animals, not pets. Some seals have either very distinct entanglements or physical features that make them so unique that they get a name. We have rescued Hulk, Julius and Brutus before, and we are still looking for Heisenberg and Gandalf, even though we do not expect to find them anymore.
Cyclops was seen first a few weeks ago at Pelican Point. The rescue team tried to catch him, but he was so big and strong that he did not even feel the net, he pushed it away like a mosquito. The second time we spotted him off a kayak, and there was unfortunately no chance to catch him.
When we got a call out from a local fish factory, we surely did not expect to meet our old friend again. We assume he likes to hang out there to get the scraps from the fishing factories, which is also the reason why we agreed to feed him in order to lure him closer, something we would never do at Pelican Point. Cyclops was very chilled and Naude eventually managed to cut the plastic packaging strap of his neck with the rescue pole. Cyclops probably didn't even know that he had ever been in trouble from entanglement, but we are very pleased that we can tick him off our to do list. 🦭
