There’s a strange phenomenon you’re likely to run into with analog film that you’d never encounter with a digital camera. It’s like entering a strange backwards universe where math seems to break down.
What’s that? You say f/2.8 at 1/10 of a second is equivalent to f/22 at 6.0 seconds? Not here. Not in reciprocity failure land.
When shooting long exposures on traditional film - be it 35mm, medium format, or large format - care must be taken in your metering process to factor in this odd phenomenon known as “reciprocity failure.” If you don’t make the necessary adjustments prescribed for your exact film, your exposures will come out too dark and your metering process will appear to be failing you.
Worry not, my friends. There’s an app for that.
