Singapore is facing a chicken shortage after its neighbor Malaysia announced an export ban of 3.6 million chickens a month starting June 1, 2022.
That’s felt most in Singapore’s national dish chicken-rice lovers and canteen owners for the urban country sources a third of its poultry from Malaysia.
Authorities say it’s a protectionist move targeting bolstering the domestic food supply due to the soaring cost of chicken feed, among which corn and grains are key components.
