Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Richard Armitage and Luke Evans announce the World Premiere of 'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies' in London on December 1 2014
The world premiere for the final Hobbit film has been announced and it will be almost as far from Wellington as it is possible to get.
In a just-released video, Sir Ian McKellen led a cast of stars who announced The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies would premiere at London's Leicester Square on December 1.
It marks the end of a long road for director Sir Peter Jackson, who has entered the fantastical mind of writer J. R.R. Tolkien six times, for three Lord of the Rings movies followed by three Hobbit movies.
"The road goes on and on and has for 14 years, but now we are at the end of the journey," McKellen said.
Wellington City Council spokesman Richard MacLean said the council was in discussions about a possible event to mark the first New Zealand screening.
Jackson's spokesman Matt Dravitzki said details of a preview screening in Wellington would be announced soon.
However, events were kicking off soon. The Global Fan Fellowship would see 150 fans from around the world, along with an international media contingent, arrive in New Zealand to tour film locations.
The tour would end in Wellington for a first, private screening with Jackson.
While the video put any hopes of a Wellington world premiere – which had been all but quashed anyway – to pasture, it did reveal that fans would be able watch it via live stream on the internet.
The video – also starring Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Luke Evans, and Orlando Bloom – also announced that stars from all six films would attend the premiere.
