While returning from Osceola, Iowa on the evening of April 29th, 2019, I made a brief stop in Melrose to catch Amtrak's westbound California Zephyr for that evening. Running a little behind schedule, the train appeared shortly after 8 o'clock at sunset.
Unbeknownst to me, the train had an Amtrak California single-deck car in the consist, behind the locomotives. This is a Horizon-fleet Dinette car, used on California's state-supported trains out of Sacramento, Oakland, and Bakersfield. Although most of their equipment is of the double-deck "California Coach" design, the state purchased a small fleet of single-deck cars in 2008 to meet increasing ridership demands. This fleet includes 14 refurbished Comet IB coaches (former New Jersey Transit cars), and 3 Horizon-fleet Dinette cars, on lease from Amtrak. The car in today's Zephyr consist is Dinette #53509, named "Pacific Horizon".
This train was filmed earlier at Agency, IA by YouTube user A. Train, as seen here: [ Ссылка ]. The train was filmed the following day as it arrived in Fort Morgan, CO, by YouTube user Mike Jensen 80701: [ Ссылка ]
Several years back, I caught some other California Zephyr trains featuring these single-deck cars, in January 2014 ([ Ссылка ]) and April 2014 ([ Ссылка ]), as well as some unreleased footage from last year.
