Neptunium (Np) is a highly radioactive element that was first discovered in 1940 by Edwin McMillan and Philip Abelson. It belongs to the actinide series of the periodic table, which consists of elements with atomic numbers ranging from 89 to 103. Neptunium is named after the planet Neptune, which was discovered just eight years before the element.
