Brazilian police raided the country's biggest slum near Rio de Janeiro yesterday ahead of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics. Some 3,000 officers were backed by military tanks and helicopters as they took control of Rocinha slum from drug traffickers early Sunday morning. According to reports, Rocinha, home to 70,000 to 100,000 residents, will remain occupied for at least another few weeks to come. The operation is said to have benefited from the arrest last week of Antonio Bonfim Lopes, the drug lord who ruled Rocinha. Source: BBC, Bloomberg, SF Gate.
