The story of Buck Tardley's journey into remaking The Residents' "Not Available" is not one of joy, but of basic human survival. During a particularly trying time in his life, all had seemed to be lost as the world overturned a dumpster of foulness on his head. As his final pillar of support crumbled around him, he was forced to re-embrace one of the only unchanging gems in his life, "Not Available" by the Residents.
But how to pay homage? Buy 50 copies and give them away? Write the Residents a feel good letter? No. What about re-recording the album purely from memory? After so many years of listening, some odd bastardization of the album had been burned into his brain. What would a chewed up, partially digested remnant of a great album sound like coming out of someone else 35 years after it was originally recorded?
So the band got together in the summer of 2010 and, without having listened to it for over 6 months, recorded what they remembered or wanted "Not Available" to be. The words may be off, the notes are definitely off, but much of the melancholic beauty is captured in a new way to appreciate a timeless album. [ Ссылка ]
