Elephant Trunk-to-Body Behaviour: Episode 9 of our Elephant Behaviour Series
Elephants are constantly communicating with so many various gestures, sometimes it is their ears, sometimes their head movements, at times their ears, but mostly with their trunks!
A common behaviour that is observed is their trunks touching on another bodies.
The wonderful team at Elephant Voices have studied their behaviours for over 50 years, and have referenced such behaviours as “trunk - to body” and they have recognised this behaviour in four different contexts of behaviours. These contexts are : Affiliative, Birth, Calf Reassurance & Protection and Social Play. In this episode we focus on one of the above, namely Calf Reassurance and Protection.
We explain these behaviours in detail in episode 9 and we have shar some examples from our HERD archives, to see the actions in motion. We continue to mourn the loss of Phabeni, and although he sadly passed away recently, we still feel that his memories can continue through our educational series about elephant behaviour. We have so many beautiful moments of his little life that also shows wonderful examples of love, protection, and care from his new found family, the Jabulani Herd.
Thank you to the team at Elephant Voices for sharing all their research on their public platform called the Elephant Ethogram, which provides the world with all this incredible insight into elephant behaviours.

** Our elephant behaviour videos showcase various elephant behaviours through our video archives that feature a unique semi-habituated herd, called the Jabulani Herd. By making use of the information available on the Elephant Ethogram, a public platform created and shared freely by the team at Elephant Voices, we are showcasing some of the more commonly seen physical behaviours by sharing a few examples of individual behaviours in succession. All behaviours are always open to interpretation and based on numerous contributing factors which are taken into consideration.**
