Vladimir Putin has recognised the independence of two separatist-held regions in Ukraine, with a threat that Russian troops could enter the areas.

The Russian President's speech went on for over an hour, providing something of a revisionist history of Ukraine's role in the Soviet Union.

His government had also supplied video footage of people being 'evacuated' from Donbas, which it turned out was filmed days earlier.
