Scott McLaughlin had exited the pits on Lap 72 just in front of Romain Grosjean. The pair were in fourth and fifth at the time but were fighting for the effective lead of the race.
The pair had contact going to Turn 4, sending both into the tire barrier on the outside of the corner. Grosjean was out while McLaughlin continued, receiving a pit lane drive through penalty and finished two laps down.
