China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) Geng Shuang on Monday criticized the United States for its double-standard approach on the Korean Peninsula issue.
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting, Geng said that UN Security Council members should send positive signals, encourage the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to resume dialogue, and create conditions for deescalating the situation.
Geng also criticized the U.S. double-standard approach on the nuclear nonproliferation, saying the U.S. is imposing restrictions on the DPRK while transferring weapons-grade enriched uranium to Australia.
A few countries must heed the call of the international community and countries in the region, abandon the Cold War mentality and bloc politics, and stop political manipulation, said Geng, adding that they should implement non-proliferation obligations in an earnest manner, back out the decision on nuclear submarine cooperation, and take concrete actions to set the right direction for the political settlement of the Korean peninsula issue.
"The U.S. has been asking the DPRK to abandon its nuclear program in name of nonproliferation, while transferring weapons-grade enriched uranium by the ton to a non-nuclear state. This is a classic double standard. The double standard has undermined the Security Council's credibility. The nuclear submarine cooperation carried out by three countries including the U.S. undermines the international nuclear non-proliferation system, stimulates arms race, and endangers regional peace and security," said Geng.
