Germany, Hungary and Slovakia each began giving out their first COVID-19 vaccine shots on Saturday, just hours after receiving the first shipments, a day ahead of the European Union's (EU) official vaccine rollout.
In Hungary, health-care workers were the first vaccinated in Budapest, while in Slovakia, it was a top expert on infectious disease and member of the government's pandemic commission, Vladimir Krcmery, who received the first shot. Krcmery said it felt "even less than when a mosquito bites you."
Germany took a different stance on the rollout, with a nursing home resident being the first person to be vaccinated in Sachsen-Anhalt.
The first shipments of the vaccine arrived at hospitals across the EU late Friday and early Saturday, marking a moment of hope for a region that includes some of the world's earliest and worst-hit virus spots, such as Italy and Spain.
