With 4e Twilight 2000 arriving with backers I take a look at where it all started. I printed out the first edition pdf and quickly cover the system, focussing on character generation but also flipping through all the bits that came in the original boxset.
A classic set of rules, created during the Cold War era, it was a vision of a potential dystopian future where nukes are used and civilisation struggles in the aftermath. Heavy on maths, trying to model everything and typical of 80s design ethos. Once you strip away the apparent complexity it is not actually that hard a ruleset to play at the table (I recall having fun with a con game using it to re create a predator like mission). normally you can pick a skill and try to roll under you rating on a d100.
Verdict - 4e does things better for my tastes but there is a lot to love in the game that started it all
clarification on initial print run from November 1984 (source ffe)
'The initial Twilight: 2000 boxed game print-run of 10,635 was exhausted by March and another print run of 10,000 was ordered for April.'
