At least 28 civilians have been killed after a catastrophic barrel bomb strike in northern Syria. The Assad regime is alleged to have been behind the attack, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The bomb was dropped on a bus shelter in a rebel-held region of Aleppo. It's believed at least 30 more were injured in the blast, with children said to be among the casualties.
Video footage of the attack, uploaded to YouTube by local activists, shows shards of scrap metal littered across the bus station pavement. Firefighters and civilians raced to mute the flames engulfing vehicles in the vicinity.
Paramedics rushed in to attend to the wounded, while removing the deceased from the site of the blast. Most of the dead have yet to be identified, with bodies badly charred.
A report from Amnesty International recently lambasted the Syrian government’s use of barrel bombs, claiming similar attacks in Aleppo have killed more than 3000 civilians since 2012. The report states that at least 85 barrel bomb attacks have taken place in the last month alone, according to local Syrian activists.
