three tests performed with variations for mic positions and offsetting. drums are mapex saturn 22x20 with stock heads: remo powerstroke for batter and resonant
1. offset and directly capturing the beater sound
2. with or without muffle
3. inside micing vs outside micing
4. close to batter, close to resonant
setup:
1. inside micing, close to beater position is 4" from batter head while close to resonant position is about 2" from the resonant head
2. outside micing, mic is inserted about 1" inside the port
3. offset position points to the edge of the shell to capture a less direct sound compared against directly pointing the mic to the beater
4. mics are shure: beta 52 on kick, beta 57 on snare, sm81 overheads. recorded from behringer xr18 with no fx or processing then sent directly to the canon 70d mic input.
findings:
1. use muffing to get a lower and more solid sound. no muffling produces a nasty 'basketball dribble' sound
2. i like the offset position better. offset position provides a flatter, more natural sound while pointing the mic directly to the beater produces an increase in boominess.
3. having the front head on gives a fuller, rounder sound
4. i like the sound of the mic inside the shell. inside mic is more natural and does not capture the room sound while having the mic outside the shell captures the room sound more and susceptible to more resonance
