The pectoral muscles are two muscles that connect the front of the chest with the bones of the upper arm and shoulder: the pectoralis major muscle, also called the 'breast stroke muscle' and the pectoralis minor muscle. They have their origins at the ribs, sternum and clavicle and insert at the humerus and scapula. The innervation of the pectoral muscles is provided by the medial and lateral pectoral nerves from the brachial plexus.

The main functions of the pectoral muscles involve the adduction and anteversion of the shoulder joint (pectoralis major) and abduction and depression of the scapula (pectoralis minor). With a fixed scapula, the pectoralis minor action also involves elevating the ribs, making it an accessory inspiratory muscle.
