DRDO’s VSHORAD
VSHORADS is a Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPAD) designed and being developed indigenously by DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and Indian Industry Partners. It is being developed for neutralizing low altitude aerial threats at short ranges such as UAVs, helicopters and aircrafts. In the multi-layered air defence network, VSHORAD is going to be the last line of defence.
VSHORAD: Technical Specifications
The missile system is going to be a tripod launched short range man portable surface to air missile. The missile’s design, including the launcher, has been highly optimised for portability.
VSHORADS system will incorporates many novel technologies including Dual-band IIR Seeker, miniaturised Reaction Control System and integrated avionics. The missile is propelled by a dual thrust solid motor.
The missile will have a length of 2 meters and diameter of 90 mm. The missile will weigh 20.5 kg and will have effective range of 7 km. The overall weight of the system is going to be 40 kg. The missile will have flight time of 15-20s and speed of Mach 1.5. It will use pre-fragmentation warhead weighing 2 kg. Its maximum launch altitude is going to be 3.5 km. The missile will feature an Imaging Infra-red based seeker system.
VSHORAD Trials
On 27th September 2022, DRDO conducted two successful test flight of Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile from a ground based portable launcher at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha.
On 14 MAR 2023, DRDO has conducted two consecutive successful flight tests of Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur off the coast of Odisha . The flight tests were carried out from a ground-based man portable launcher against high speed unmanned aerial targets, mimicking approaching and receding aircraft. The targets were successfully intercepted, meeting all mission objectives.
VSHORAD Production & Orders
In a meeting held by Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on January 10, 2023, under the chairmanship of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) has been granted for procurement of VSHORAD (IR Homing) missile system.
The Adani Defence has been chosen for joint development and the firm is confident of developing a commercial version of VSHORAD by the end of year 2023. The company was tasked with developing missile products under Development-cum-Production Partner (DCPP) policy.
Under the DCPP policy, DRDO designs the product and hands over the drawings and technical particulars to the private or public industry to make a prototype. This prototype is then put to tests and trials. Based on the trial’s outcome, these prototypes are allowed for commercial production.
