Ep. 35 GROUTING & MORE GROUTING MOSAICS! Plus a sample ceramic mosaic.
I start by grouting the mosaic crane in two different colors, white and gray. Using the NO TAPE method, I carefully apply and clean the feathered areas. Only the highlights have white grout as the gray defines the feathers better.
Then I move to the demo mosaic I am making for my class using textured tiles. This mosaic is entitled "Shelter in Place." I use custom colored warm red thinset to adhere the pieces, starting with back buttering the central house shape. The big pieces are easily applied and have good coverage when applied this way, but I do have to make sure the substrate is covered in between the pieces so the white does not show through. So when I start laying in smaller pieces, I find it is easier to lay a bed of thinset and place the tesserae in the bed. I go ahead and make a scratch coat of the tinted thinset over the remainder of the bubble area.
Next, I start grouting the hibiscus mosaic with black sanded grout. Then the edges are painted black so they recede when it is placed in a black floater frame. The back was a bit messy from grout and paint, so I give it a fresh coat of black acrylic to clean it up.
Lastly, I tackle grouting the heavily textured background on the crane using three different tones of the same color - linen. This time I tape off the crane, blending the grout to transition between the tones as I apply it. The bottom where I have made stained glass grass is so easy to apply and clean! I use my vacuum to keep it tidy and clean up any grout crumbs.
The textured glass is a different story! I use picks and a grout brush to clean the grout and it takes extra care and attention. YAY! It's finally done! Although it was a beast to work with, the textured dishes I used really accent the crane and give interest to the background. I set it up outside to admire for a bit before we deliver it to my crane loving mother-in-law.
