Lyme disease is on the rise in the US. The disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. Ticks carry the bacteria, which they pick up from deer or mice. Lyme spirochetes can travel to anywhere in the body. Early symptoms are similar to the flu. The first sign of Lyme disease in 50% of cases is a bulls-eye shaped rash. Lyme can cause problems in all body systems. Without treatment, the disease becomes more and more debilitating. Source: US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention
