This video tutorial for beginners demonstrates how to graft a fruit tree using the whip and tongue method. Specifically grafting a peach scion onto a nectarine stock but can be used for any grafting between trees for example stone fruits or between varieties of citrus. This is particularly useful in a small yard when growing fruit for domestic use. Here follows a step-by-step approach.
1. Select a suitable scion stick about 8mm in diameter and match it to a twig of similar diameter on the stock tree.
2. Cut both scion and stock with matching angles so that they fit together seamlessly with no exposed cut surface.
3. It is most important for the cambium layers are in contact with each other.
4. Cut a slit about 2/3 up each cut surface in opposite directions.
5. Interlace the two ‘tongues’ thus formed to stabilise the union.
6. Bind the union with grafting tape to seal the moisture in.
7. Remove any flush from the stock promote sap flow up the scion.
8. If successful the scion with flush in about 3 weeks
