Iraq marked the 60th birthday of President Saddam Hussein on Monday (28/4) with lavish celebrations and tributes to the leader who has defied crushing UN sanctions to keep an iron grip on power.
Bedouin tribesmen performed sword-dances in Baghdad's main Liberation Square. The capital's streets were plastered with pictures of Saddam dressed in suits, in military uniform and in traditional robes.
On Sunday, 150 couples were wed in a mass marriage ceremony in Baghdad. A giant cake was cut by Latif Nassif al-Jassem, a leader of the ruling Baath party.
