(18 Apr 2018) China and Nepal on Wednesday vowed to strengthen bilateral relations by further connecting infrastructure and establishing a cross-border economic zone.
The pledge came as Nepal's Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali met with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi during his first visit to China in that role.
At a news conference following talks, Wang said the two governments were discussing the establishment of a cross-border economic zone and free trade area, and that China will help Nepal in diversifying its energy supply.
Wang emphasised how the improvement of links with Nepal could lead to the creation of a possible economic corridor involving India as well as China and Nepal.
India is traditionally Nepal's biggest economic supporter and trade partner, however there have been concerns Nepal may now lean more toward China as new Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli heads a government of communist parties.
During their talks, the two ministers also discussed China's assistance with the reopening of the two Nepali highways connecting with China which were destroyed by an earthquake 3 years ago.
Gyawali also stated the two countries had decided to push forward with a feasibility study on a cross-border railway system.
