Powerful earthquakes in Afghanistan have killed more than 2,000 people and injured more than 9,000, the Taliban administration said on Sunday (October 8).
The multiple quakes on Saturday (October 7) hit 35 kilometres (20 miles) northwest of the city of Herat, with one measuring 6.3 magnitude, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.
A Herat health department official told Reuters more than 200 dead had been brought to different hospitals.
Many areas of Afghanistan are inaccessible by road, and scattered villages are often made of mud structures that are susceptible to collapse.
An earthquake last year in eastern Afghanistan killed 1,000 and injured hundreds.
