The Hershey is the only surviving old style interurban electric railway in the western hemisphere. It takes about four hours to ride the line from just outside Havana to Matanzas, a city that lies 140 km to the east. Three trains depart each terminal each day, they meet at the center, Hershey, exchange batons and continue on. There are no signals and its all single track with trolley wire on wood poles. Two older, but heavily rebuilt cars still exist for railfan and tourist group charter, but I did not video them.
In December, the climate felt as comfortable as it is gorgeous on the day of this shooting. I hope all serious railfans take this journey of discovery of rural Cuban life via inter urban railway. Music by Puente Latino "Takes You There".
