Black Lives Matter protesters have set up a barricaded zone around a police precinct building in Seattle, after days of violent clashes with law enforcement. The activists have declared an “autonomous zone” after police retreated from the Capitol Hill area.
The zone has been dubbed CHAZ, which stands for “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone”, and hundreds of people peacefully occupy the streets by hosting political debates, outdoor concerts, screening events, painting, free food, and even some gardening.
US President Donald Trump has heavily criticised the protesters by calling them ‘domestic terrorists’, and tweeted to mayor Jenny Durkan that if she won’t take her city back, he will.
Tensions are still high in Seattle, and it is not clear how long this social experiment will last.
