In November 1996, voters narrowly approved a referendum to construct a retractable-roof ballpark in downtown Houston. The 1999 season would be the last played by the Houston Astros in the Astrodome. This segment from Houston’s KPRC-TV, broadcast on October 9, captures the scene at the final home game: a 7–5 loss to the Atlanta Braves. With the opening of Enron Field (now Minute Maid Park) in 2000 and Reliant (now NRG) Stadium in 2002, the "Eighth Wonder of the World" swiftly became obsolete. Code violations prompted its formal closure in 2008. Harris County officials have since considered and approved various refurbishment plans, but the fate of the Astrodome remains uncertain.
