Thousands of students, blowing whistles and banging pots and pans together, formed a noisy protest march through the streets of the Serbian capital, Belgrade on Thursday (2/1).
It was the second of what the students hoped would be daily 'noise'
demonstrations designed symbolically to drown out the sound of the
government-aligned Serbian TV news programme which runs at the same time.
In another part of the capital, the Serbian opposition called a mass rally again on the 45th straight day of protests. The protesters marched forward to confront the lines of riot police, but then turned away without incident.
People at the rally greeted with prolonged applause a statement read out from leaders of the Serbian Orthodox Church. In a strongly worded statement church leaders "energetically and publicly condemned" the cancellation by the authorities of sweeping opposition victories in major Serbian towns on November 17, which have sparked unprecedented street demonstrations.
