Gunmen shot dead newborn children, their mothers and nurses as they stormed a maternity hospital in Kabul killing at least 14.
The attack by unidentified fighters triggered an hours' long firefight as counter terrorism forces tried to clear the 100-bed building in a Shia district of the Afghan capital.
Afghan commandos said they had rescued at least 80 children and mothers from the hospital, which hosts a mother-and-baby unit supported by the aid agency Doctors without Borders. Three international staff were reported evacuated.
