(7 Sep 2019) A large portion of Avalon Pier was washed away by Hurricane Dorian which moved through the Outer Banks area of North Carolina Friday.
Waves continued to pound the nearly 700-foot wooden fishing pier Saturday, located in Kill Devil Hills, NC.
As Hurricane Dorian battered the pier Friday a large section collapsed from the heavy rains and up to 90 mph (144 kph) winds.
The Avalon Pier was built in 1958 and stretches out into the Atlantic Ocean.
