Through force of his tyrannical personality, Balakirev was able to bring together a group of composers in the 1850s and 60s with the shared goal of composing music in an authentically Russian style. His influence continued to make its mark on the works of composers such as Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov long after their group had become estranged.

Balakirev's "The Lark" is a transcription of an 1840 song by Mikhail Glinka (Михаил Иванович Глинка) of the same name. Glinka, often regarded as the wellspring of Russian music was a composer of enduring significance to Balakirev.
