Video Rough transcript:
Hey, what's up everyone.
Today we’re going to give a quick overview of the Rack Pinion Mate in SolidWorks.
Here we have the assembly we used in our Gear Mate tutorial.
We’re going to add a rack to assembly and mate it to the Blue Gear.
To do this, we’ll click on insert components dropdown on the assembly tab of the command manager and select insert components
I have the gear rack part open, so it shows up in my open documents window.
And we just click to add it to the assembly.
We’ll position the rack with a coincident mate to the front face of the wall and Plane 1.
This will still allow the rack to travers in the x direction. As we discussed in the Gear Mate video, you want to make sure these parts aren’t fully defined and are free to move in the intended direction.
In this case the we want to make sure the rack can move along the X axis but has no other degrees of freedom.
Now, we want to align the teeth of the gear to the rack, so it looks cosmetically accurate.
Ok, now we’re ready to create the Rack Pinion Mate.
We’ll select the mate icon on the command manager and expand the Mechanical Mates Tab.
And select the Rack Pinion icon.
For the Rack Selection, we need to select a liner edge on the Rack.
For the Piston/Gear Selection, we’re going to select the hub of the Blue Gear.
We can choose to enter the Pinion Pitch diameter or the Rack Travel/Revolution, which for this case, would just be the circumference of the gear’s pitch diameter.
We’ll enter in 2.5 inches for the pitch diameter, which is the pitch diameter of the blue gear. And hit the green check box.
Now lets zoom out and see how we did.
Lets move gear, and we have a problem. The rack is moving in the wrong directions.
To fix this we have to open the mate and select reverse.
The rack is now moving in the correct direction with the gear but the alignment for the teeth is slightly out of alignment.
So we’re going to suppress the rack pinion mate. This will allow us to more the rack.
And we’ll put it back into alignment and un-suppress the mate.
Now as we move the gears, the rack moves along with it.
