UPDATE! All of these parts were ordered back in October/November of 2020 and we didn't receive them until February of 2021. Unfortunately since then, the current silicone/GPU shortage has only gotten worse, so the scalping situation is pretty terrible right now. Because of this, we'd personally recommend waiting for things to go back to normal before building a PC right now, UNLESS you are incredibly lucky, patient and/or mega-rich, manage to get a decent GPU with a pre-built or you're happy to build a PC and use an older gen GPU for the time being. Good luck!

In today's video, we are building our new 4K Video Editing / Gaming Workstation PC! Although we have primarily used laptops over the past few years (Dell 7559, Dell XPS 15), for the past few months both have really struggled with bigger video projects, especially as we made the transition to 4K video editing. We're also both big gamers and playing the latest AAA titles is basically a no-no.
We also found that despite what 'content creation' laptop manufacturers might market to you, the vast majority of them in the £1500-2500 price range, are simply not good enough for high-end content creation, and wouldn't be much of an improvement over our current laptops.
We looked into getting a higher-end workstation laptop but found that the ones capable of editing big 4K video projects comfortably and with a decent enough GPU for gaming comfortably would cost around £4000. So instead, we spent less than half of that building a new workstation PC.
Although we both have prior experience building PC's and are also big tech nerds, building a PC is genuinely very simple and straightforward as long as you know what parts you need and what's compatible with one another. With a bit of research, genuinely anyone could build a PC customized to their individual needs while saving a ton of money as well. For the same price as a mid-tier XPS 15 or Macbook Pro, we were able to build a PC far more powerful and get way more for our money.
So for anyone making high-end content, and who doesn't need to be portable all the time, we would HIGHLY recommend building a PC over buying a laptop as your main workstation, but definitely keep your old laptop handy for when those situations where you need to be portable!
