In recent years, the world has witnessed a surge in the demand for eco-friendly fuels. As a result, a new contender in the green fuel market has emerged – ammonia-based fuels. Ammonia has the potential to become the fuel of the future, and a big benefit with this fuel it the fact that it is an easily transportable and storable fuel that can be produced using renewable energy sources. In this video, we will explore how ammonia-based fuels are made, what makes them great, and the cars that might run on them in the future.
So lets start with How Ammonia-Based Fuel are Made?
Ammonia-based fuels are produced using renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. The process involves the conversion of water and nitrogen from the air into ammonia. The hydrogen component of water is split from the oxygen through a process called electrolysis. The nitrogen component of ammonia is extracted from the air through a process called air separation. These two components are then combined in a process called Haber-Bosch synthesis to produce ammonia. Now currently most of the ammonia produced on our planet is made with Hydrogen that was produced thru Natural gas reformation, which isn’t super clean. But I have to add, so many companies are making super effiecent electrolysers that would be able to supply the hydrogen in a cost effective and green manner. Companies like Hysata is hard at work building electrolysers that have almost no loss in energy potential. Now what Makes Ammonia-Based Fuels Great?
Well One of the key benefits of ammonia-based fuels is that they are easily transportable and storable. Where as Hydrogen is a little more complicated. Ammonia also has a high energy density, which means that a small amount of it can provide a large amount of energy. Additionally, ammonia is a liquid at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, which makes it easy to transport and store. This is in contrast to other alternative fuels such as hydrogen, which requires high-pressure storage tanks.
But it doesn’t stop their. Another benefit of ammonia-based fuels is their low carbon emissions. When burned, ammonia only produces nitrogen and water, water is harmless to the environment and nitrogen which on the other had isn’t ideal. Nitrogen in large amounts can be bad for the planet and if to much is released it can be bad for our health aswell. But you can deNox the tail emissions of these cars. similarly to the principle of the NOx selective catalytic reduction a process used in various post treatment units. Now for The Cars That Might Run on Ammonia-Based Fuels

BMW, for example, has been conducting research on the use of ammonia as a fuel for internal combustion engines. The German automaker has successfully tested an engine that runs on a mixture of gasoline and ammonia.
