CAPTION: Georgia says Russia is taking steps to leave Georgian territory. Moscow must withdraw its troops from buffer zones surrounding Georgia's separatist regions by Friday under ceasefire agreements signed in the wake of the August war. (Oct. 8)

RUSSIAN TROOPS ARE PULLING OUT OF UNDISPUTED GEORGIAN TERRITORY - AND WITHDRAWING INTO GEORGIA'S SEPARATIST REGION OF SOUTH OSSETIA.
TWO MONTHS AFTER THE GEORGIAN-RUSSIAN WAR -- RUSSIAN PRESIDENT DMITRY MEDVEDEV PROMISED THAT RUSSIAN FORCES WOULD LEAVE THE AREA BY MIDNIGHT WEDNESDAY.

DOZENS OF MILITARY VEHICLES ROLLED NORTH THROUGH THE RUSSIAN-ESTABLISHED BUFFER ZONE. MANY GEORGIANS LINED THE ROADS TO WATCH. THEY SAY THEY ARE RELIEVED AFTER WEEKS OF ARSON AND LOOTING THAT THEY BLAME ON RUSSIA'S SEPARATIST ALLIES.
WESTERN COUNTRIES HAVE CONDEMNED RUSSIA'S INVASION OF GEORGIA -- AND ITS RECOGNITION OF SOUTH OSSETIA AND ABKHAZIA AS INDEPENDENT NATIONS. RUSSIA PLANS TO KEEP NEARLY 4,000 TROOPS IN EACH OF THE SEPARATIST REGIONS --DESPITE AN AGREEMENT TO RETURN TO PRE-CONFLICT POSITIONS. GEORGIAN OFFICIALS SAY THEY WON'T CONSIDER THE WITHDRAWAL COMPLETED UNTIL RUSSIAN TROOPS LEAVE THE BREAKAWAY REGIONS.
