Having finished the "excersize" of making the feed screw and nut, I am not 100% satisfied. The fit is not that much better than the old, but then again, this was nearly acceptable. The only worry is that I have a feeling that after some "wear-in" it has some minor slop. Not certain, but it might be that the screw not being perfect (not ground) has some minute nicks/burrs that will wear the mating brass nut. I have had the screw/nut, gears etc. all mounted and tried to run back and forth many times. No real backlash detected, but..
It might be that I will make another nut or screw. Much work, but it would be foolish to mount everything together and then find out it is not good.
Aall in all, this has been an education. A better machinist now than before this started. Pricewise it is not recommended though.. I reckon if I got a machine shop to do this, or bought from a screw specialist company (after all, lead screw making is a speciality that some excel in..) it would probably cost less/equal to me purchasing steel, brass, trapezoidal threading inserts and arbors.
