Evidence suggests that Ashoka was practicing Buddhism way before Kalinga. Not only that, the inscriptions in Orissa or nearby miss any regret. Instead, contemporary Buddhist texts suggest that the king continued to persecute Jains and Ajivikas after the war, since they openly opposed his rule and supported his brothers.
Ashoka was no pacifist, he was one of the cruelest of all Maurians.
