The Houston Aeros - Winnipeg Jets rivalry was the most intense in league history. Featuring two of the game’s greatest legends in Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull, these two franchises combined for five of the rebel league’s seven Avco Cup championships.
The bad blood between these two legendary squads was on full display December 5, 1975, before 10, 700 fans in Houston’s Summit. The high-flying Jets and the hard-nosed Aeros squared off in a game that featured a season’s worth of excitement, plot twists and suspense. In all over 30 penalties for a total of 100 minutes were called. Moreover, two players were ejected for charging at referee Ron Asselstine, who then resigned immediately after the game (but would have a great NHL career as a linesman)..
Ultimately this spirited contest was decided by a miraculous comeback, capped by the winning goal scored by a player who had zero goals at that point of the season and would not score again for over two years.
