Topic - Pedophilia & Sex Offender Sentencing – Forensic Psychology Series
Psychologists have conducted extensive research on the nature, causes, and treatment of sexual offending. Because of their expertise, psychologists are often asked to provide assessments of convicted sex offenders to help courts decide on a just punishment (Bartol & Bartol, 2019).
The U.S. government have increasingly placed mandates on states to revise their systems pertaining to the classification of sex offenders, thereby presumably making registration and notification laws more consistent across the country (Bartol & Bartol, 2019).
In an analysis of sex offender commitment, researchers learned that more than half of the men studied had not been diagnosed with a sexual deviation disorder. 26% with antisocial personality disorder, and 52% with substance abuse or dependency. Psychologists are likely to be involved in both the assessment and the treatment (if provided) of sexual offenders. Although the forensic psychologist does not set social policy, they should be aware of current research regarding the matter (Bartol & Bartol, 2019).
In this series, we will review the follow sub-areas in Forensic Psychology
--Police and Public Safety Psychology
--Legal Psychology
--Psychology of Crime and Delinquency
--Victimology and Victim Services
--Correctional Psychology
