Went on an epic hike with Pam and my brother up Turtlehead Peak out in Red Rock Canyon, NV. The hike is rated a strenuous because it's steep. It's not so bad if you take your time and go at a steady comfortable pace. It's 4.6 miles roundtrip with an elevation gain of about 2,014 feet. The view from the top is pretty awesome. You can see the strip as well as a lot of Red Rock Canyon below. Like all the previous hikes we brought along food. This time it was the Jetboil and Mountain House meals. My brother hasn't had it before and hasn't done much hiking so we figured we'd give him both awesome experiences.
Turtlehead is definitely worth doing if you're in Red Rock, but keep in mind it will take on average about 3-4 hours to complete. I wouldn't hike it in the summer months since it would be very warm as there's no real shade or cover for the entire trail. Winter would be optimal since the weather is cool and the sun isn't blasting you. You will have to pay the entrance fee to get into Red Rock though, but worth it especially if you're outdoorsy and just get the National Park Pass like I do. To get to the trailhead after you're in the park, go to the Calico Tanks parking area then the follow the signs. On the trail itself there are red, green, white spray painted dots and arrows that will lead you up.
