We did what signs everywhere tell visitors not to do. On April 7, 2009, we hiked down South Kaibab Trail to the Colorado River and into Phantom Ranch and then back up via the Bright Angel Trail all in a single day. My husband, Jerry, and I had done this before, almost exactly 10 years ago. That was when we were training for our first 50k trail run and before we had our three sons. We wanted to see if we could do it again. We did it in 9 hours, but it's not recommended unless you're in excellent physical condition. It is an absolutely amazing way to experience Grand Canyon, from the rim, it's depths and interior all the way to the Colorado River that carves its way through it. A phenomenal adventure... that was breathtaking in more than one way!
