In the recent Rugby Championship match between the All Blacks and Springboks, a rare infringement took place that could have major consequences for All Blacks captain Sam Cane as he prepares for future matches. Referee Matthew Carley delivered a standout performance, particularly when he penalized Cane for a rarely-called infraction at the scrum, a moment that should serve as a lesson for Cane and other flankers across world rugby.

The incident occurred just three minutes into the game during the second scrum. The Springboks, with Ox Nche and Frans Malherbe leading the charge, had the upper hand, forcing the All Blacks' front row—particularly tighthead prop Tyrel Lomax—on the back foot. As Lomax struggled and lost his push, Cane, sensing the pressure, shifted forward from his position in the back row and began to push directly against Nche, the Springbok loosehead prop.
